What Are The Effects Of Zeaxanthin On The Eyes?

Zeaxanthin is a new type of oil-soluble natural pigment which is widely found in green leafy vegetables, flowers, fruits, wolfberry and yellow corn. In nature, it often coexists with lutein, β-carotene, cryptoxanthin, etc. to form a carotenoid mixture.

In the human body, zeaxanthin is a strong antioxidant. It can also protect the tissues and cells of the body by quenching singlet oxygen, scavenging free radicals and other antioxidant activities, thereby protecting the biological system from some excessive oxidation reactions. Potentially harmful effects

Anticancer effect

Zeaxanthin, like many carotenoids, can protect cells and organs from damage caused by free radicals in the human body.

Prevent cardiovascular

Studies have reported that people who consume more carotenoids on a daily basis are at lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease (Angiocardiopathy). Researchers found that zeaxanthin can inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) under in vitro conditions; zeaxanthin can significantly reduce the incidence of myocardial infarction and help slow the process of arteriosclerosis.

Prevent cataract

Zeaxanthin is one of the only two types of carotenoids in the lens. It has 11 conjugated double bonds in its molecule and has a hydroxyl group on the tail end group. This structure gives it a strong antioxidant capacity. As a strong antioxidant, it can quench the triplet state of singlet oxygen and photosensitizers, remove damaging oxygen free radicals, prevent membrane lipid peroxidation, reduce the formation of lipofuscin, and prevent the formation of cataracts.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only two carotenoids found in the macula of the eye retina, and their chemical structures are very similar. These two substances cannot be synthesized in the human body and must be ingested through food or supplements.
