What is Danshen extract?
Salvia miltiorrhiza extract is the dried root and rhizome extract of Danshen, a plant of the Lamiaceae family. It contains bioactive substances such as tanshinone, cryptotanshinone, isotanshinone, tanshinone, tanshinol, and vitamins A, E, and metal elements such as iron and potassium. Tanshinone has estrogen-like functions, and estrogen can shrink the sebaceous glands and reduce sebum secretion. Therefore, cosmetic creams prepared with Danshen as an active ingredient have a therapeutic effect on acne caused by hyperandrogenism and excessive sebum secretion.
Pharmacological effects
1. Antioxidant effect
Danshen extract has a strong antioxidant effect. In vitro and in vivo experiments have shown that tannic acid B can scavenge oxygen free radicals and inhibit lipid peroxidation. Its effect is stronger than vitamin C, vitamin E, and mannitol. It is one of the strongest natural products with antioxidant effects known so far.

Preparation method
(1) Crush the washed and dried Salvia miltiorrhiza to powder and pass it through a 20-mesh sieve. Take the sieved material for later use.
(2) Add 500 g of Salvia miltiorrhiza powder to a sealed container with a stirrer, then add 100-200 ml of 95% ethanol solution, stir slowly to fully moisten the Salvia miltiorrhiza, and then let it stand for 0.5-1 hour to allow the Salvia miltiorrhiza to moisten and swell.
(3) Put the swollen Salvia miltiorrhiza into a percolation cylinder with a volume of 1000-1600 ml, put a piece of cylindrical filter paper of suitable shape on the top layer of Salvia miltiorrhiza, and put an appropriate amount of washed and dried fine sand on the paper. Connect a rubber tube to the bottom outlet of the percolation cylinder, and add 95% ethanol solution from the rubber tube until the liquid level of the ethanol solution is higher than the surface of Salvia miltiorrhiza, and then control the flow rate of the percolation liquid from bottom to top to 3-5 ml/min. Keep observing the color of the percolation liquid. When the color of the percolation liquid is light, the percolation can be completed.
(4) When the obtained filtrate is concentrated under reduced pressure to a concentration of about 1 mg of Salvia miltiorrhiza crude drug per ml, the extract is obtained.
