What Are The Benefits Of Phytosphingosine For Repairing The Skin Barrier?

How does phytosphingosine repair the skin barrier?

Phytosphingosine is not only one of the parent nuclei that make up ceramide, but also a type of physiological lipid. Related studies have shown that phytosphingosine exists in our skin and plays a vital and unique physiological function, some of which are closely related to the health of the skin barrier. Therefore, as a natural barrier repair ingredient, phytosphingosine deserves our in-depth understanding and attention!

Phytosphingosine

Natural antibacterial lipids from the skin
Phytosphingosine is a lipid that is naturally produced by the skin and has the function of inhibiting microorganisms. It plays an important role in regulating the skin microecology. Related studies have found that phytosphingosine has a high inhibitory activity against a variety of harmful bacteria. For example: Staphylococcus aureus, Propionibacterium acnes, Malassezia, etc. These microorganisms are closely related to atopic dermatitis, acne, seborrheic dermatitis and other problems.
Related studies have found that when the concentration of phytosphingosine reaches 400ug/ml (about 0.04%), the growth of Propionibacterium acnes is completely inhibited.

According to relevant research data: Using 3.7% benzoyl peroxide + 0.2% phytosphingosine to treat acne, the acne improvement rate is increased by 50% compared with using 3.7% benzoyl peroxide alone.
It can also effectively inhibit Malassezia.

The core contributor to the stability of the skin barrier
It is well known that the main role of the skin barrier function is our stratum corneum. A healthy stratum corneum is composed of three key elements: mature keratinocytes, sufficient intercellular lipids, and abundant natural moisturizing factors. Therefore, when repairing the barrier, these three aspects should also be targeted. In terms of lipid repair, related repair ingredients have become quite popular, such as ceramide, cholesterol, hydrogenated lecithin, etc. However, the importance of keratinocyte maturation and the filling of natural moisturizing factors to barrier function is often overlooked. Phytosphingosine can promote the maturation of keratinocytes and the production of natural moisturizing factors. Therefore, in some barrier repair products, we can also see phytosphingosine!

So how does phytosphingosine promote the maturation of our keratinocytes and the production of natural moisturizing factors?

First, phytosphingosine can promote the expression of TGase1 (transglutaminase 1), thereby promoting the formation of keratin capsule. Mature keratinocytes have mature keratin capsules, which contain high levels of keratin, specific membrane proteins, and loricrin.
Related studies have found that PHS (phytosphingosine) can promote the expression of TGase1 (transglutaminase 1).

Secondly, phytosphingosine can also promote the expression of Caspase-14 (caspase 14) and BLMH (bleomycin hydrolase), thereby promoting the degradation of filaggrin into natural moisturizing factors.
Phytosphingosine (PHS) can increase the expression of Caspase14 (caspase 14) and BLMH (bleomycin hydrolase), thereby promoting the production of NMF.

From the above, it can be seen that phytosphingosine is a very excellent barrier repair ingredient. Research by the manufacturer (Hora, Korea) has determined that phytosphingosine combined with the popular ceramides can synergistically promote barrier repair.

Experimental results: After 2 weeks of using the test cream, the area using 0.3% phytosphingosine + 0.5% ceramide NPs increased skin hydration by 77% and improved erythema by 230% compared to the area using 0.5% ceramide NPs alone.

As a natural barrier repair ingredient, phytosphingosine exhibits excellent skin care effects by promoting the maturation of keratinocytes and the production of natural moisturizing factors. Its synergistic effect with ceramide further enhances its repair ability, indicating its important position in future skin care products.
