Biological activity
1. Hypoglycemic effect
A large number of existing studies have shown that phloridzin has the effect of reducing fasting blood sugar. The mechanism of phloridzin reducing blood sugar is to competitively inhibit the transport of glucose molecules by glucose transporters (SGLTs and GLUTs).
2. Antioxidant effect
Phloridzin has obvious protective effect on oxidative damage caused by high-fat diet in Drosophila, enhances the activities of SOD and CAT, can significantly prolong the lifespan of Drosophila, and has a strong antioxidant effect.
3. Physiological correlation with plants
Phloridzin is closely related to physiological phenomena such as plant growth and development and stress resistance. It can resist a variety of pathogenic bacteria, such as apple scab, fire blight and so on. Low concentration of phloridzin can promote the growth of Pingyi sweet tea seedlings, but too high concentration will cause plant stubble. Phloridzin can promote the regeneration of papaya embryos, especially root growth. Therefore, when it is used as a plant growth regulator, its dosage is a key consideration.
Application
1. Food
Phloridzin has been approved as a food additive. It is a characteristic phenolic substance in apples. Due to the species, origin and other issues, the content of phloridzin in different apples varies greatly. Therefore, its content can be used as an indicator to distinguish the origin and quality of apple juice. It has potential application value whether it is used as a food additive or the development and utilization of functional food.
2. Medicine
Since phloridzin is easily hydrolyzed in the human body to form phloretin, and the absorption rate of phloridzin in the small intestine is low, phloridzin and other compounds are often designed as high molecular polymers for drug research and development.
3. Cosmetics
The antioxidant activity and anti-aging properties of phloridzin have been confirmed by modern scientific research. The hydrolyzed product of phloridzin, phloretin, can competitively inhibit the activity of tyrosinase and interfere with the synthesis of melanin, and its whitening effect is better than many whitening products on the market. However, it should be noted that phloridzin increases the expression of the tyrosinase gene by activating the cAMP signaling pathway, which leads to the production of melanin.
