What is ceramides?

Ceramide is the main component of intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum, together with cholesterol and free fatty acids to form intercellular lipids in the stratum corneum, which can regulate the crystallization of stratum corneum lipid lamellar gel, repair and improve the function of the stratum corneum barrier, and reduce water loss , really play a moisturizing role from the root. Among them, ceramides I, II and III are particularly important for the structure and function of intercellular lipids.

Ceramide is a sphingolipid with sphingosine as the backbone, and the amino group of sphingosine is connected with fatty acid through amide bond. Different combinations of amino and fatty acids form different ceramides. There are 12 kinds of ceramides in theory, and 11 kinds have been discovered so far.

What is Ceramide 3?

Ceramide 3, the English name is CERAMIDE 3. The main function of ceramide 3 in cosmetics and skin care products is to be an antioxidant and moisturizer. The risk factor is 1. It is relatively safe and can be used with confidence. Generally, it has no effect on pregnant women. Ceramide 3 has no comedogenic

Ceramide 3 is a lipid substance, a synthetic component, which is similar in structure to the substance that makes up the stratum corneum of the skin, and can quickly penetrate into the skin, combine with water in the stratum corneum, form a network structure, and lock in moisture . It has a good effect on skin moisturizing and repairing. It is an important skin revitalizing ingredient in the stratum corneum, which can strengthen the skin barrier and rebuild cells. Irritated skin especially needs more ceramides, and studies have shown that rubbing products containing ceramides can reduce redness and transepidermal water loss, and play a role in strengthening the skin barrier.

B.How to named ceramides?

Ceramides can be named according to the order of polarity, such as ceramide 3; they can also be named according to the group connected to the amide. The nomenclature of common ceramides and their percentages in the total ceramides of the stratum corneum are shown in the table below

C.Characteristics of different types of ceramides:

At present, the most mainstream types on the market are Ceramide NP, which mainly replaces Ceramide 3, Ceramide EOP, which replaces Ceramide 1, and Ceramide AP, which replaces Ceramide 6.

Ceramide 3 (NP)

Ceramide 3 (NP) is one of the most abundant ceramides and the most easily lost ceramide. The structure of intercellular lipids cannot be maintained after lack of ceramide 3, so supplementing ceramide can repair damaged intercellular lipids and strengthen the keratin barrier

b. ceramide 1(EOP) :

The biggest feature of ceramide 1 (EOP) is that the molecular chain is very long. In the figure below, we can see that the normal intercellular lipid species, ceramide (purple), cholesterol (green) and free fatty acid (orange) form a lipid bilayer membrane structure a. From a microscopic point of view, this structure is in Constantly flowing liquid crystal structure. Ceramide 1 is a long-chain ceramide, and its molecules can span the bilayer, thereby riveting the structure and making it more stable. It is also because of this characteristic that the amount of ceramide 1 only needs to be very, very small to have a good effect.

c.ceramide 6:

The function of ceramide 6 is similar to that of ceramide 3. But it also has a very important role, which is to regulate the normal desquamation of the skin. To put it simply, when there is a lack of ceramide 6 in the skin, the keratinocytes are easy to fall off layer by layer, which is our common peeling and dandruff. When the ceramide 6 is sufficient, the metabolism of the stratum corneum is normal. The skin is smooth and delicate.

D.The function of ceramide:

1 Mainly to repair the sebum membrane, strengthen the defense function of the skin surface barrier, and reduce water loss.

2 Inhibit the active sebaceous gland secretion, let the skin achieve water-oil balance, and enhance the skin's self-protection function.

3 Repair dry and damaged skin, maintain skin elasticity and moisture. Rebuilds cell cohesion.

The function of ceramide3.

F.Suitable skin type of Ceramide 3:

Ceramide 3 ingredients are suitable for wrinkled skin, sensitive skin, dry skin, tolerance skin, firm skin, non-pigmented skin, oily skin, pigmented skin, these 8 types of skin.

The application of Ceramide

Ceramide3 is a class of phospholipids with ceramide as the skeleton, mainly choline ceramide phosphate and ethanolamine ceramide phosphate, phospholipids are the main components of the cell membrane, 40% to 50% of the sebum in the stratum corneum is composed of ceramide, ceramide is the main part of the intercellular matrix, and plays an important role in maintaining the balance of water in the stratum corneum. Ceramide has a strong ability to associate water molecules, which maintain skin moisture by forming a network structure in the stratum corneum. Therefore, ceramide has the effect of keeping skin moisture, keeping skin elastic, smooth and fine, and reducing the formation of facial wrinkles
