What is Gymnemic acid?
Gymnemic acid (GA) is the main active ingredient in Gymnema sylvestre (GS) for lowering blood sugar, and its content in the plant is 3.9% to 9.6%. Gymnemic acid is a glycoside formed by jemalgenin, jemalgenin, longigenin, benbogenin (all triterpenoid sapogenins) and their various acyl compounds (2-methylbutyryl, tiglic acid, acetyl, benzoyl) and glucuronic acid, most of which belong to oleanane-type saponins.
What is the function?
Gymnema acid has unique properties and can be used to treat diabetes, hyperfunction, hypoglycemia, anemia, high cholesterol, gastric dysfunction, indigestion, obesity and weight-related diseases. Here is a brief introduction to its main functions.
1. Inhibit sweetness
Since the 1880s, extensive human trials have been conducted on the sweetness-inhibiting properties of Gymnema. Studies have shown that the active ingredients of this plant can not only inhibit the sweetness of sucrose, but also inhibit the sweetness of saccharin sodium, sodium cyclamate, glycine, D, L-alanine, D-tryptophan, D-leucine, beryllium chloride and lead acetate, but have no effect on chloroform. In addition, it can also inhibit the sweetness produced by citric acid when it encounters kiwifruit. According to records, its sweetness inhibition time can last for 15min to 24h. Animal experiments have found that the active ingredients of this plant can also inhibit the reaction of houseflies to sugar and the taste of physiological nerves.
2. Weight loss
Gymnema acid (GA) has the effect of weight loss because in addition to reducing the desire for sweets, GA can also reduce the body's absorption of sugar. GA reduces the desire for sweets by reducing the sweetness of food, but does not make it completely sweet, and this effect can last for 1 to 2 hours. Studies have shown that GA not only prevents the tongue from absorbing sugar, but also prevents the intestine from absorbing sugar. GA effectively reduces sugar absorption and changes blood sugar content by inhibiting the intestinal absorption of sugar molecules during digestion. The organic acid molecule has the same structural unit as the glucose molecule. Researchers pointed out that this herb has no reaction to the metabolism of sugar, but indirectly stimulates the pancreas to secrete insulin. In India, people often eat 3 to 4 grams of dried leaves a day to adjust urine sugar, and the effect can be seen in 3 to 4 months. Kenji Ishihara once perfused the upper small intestine of mice with glucose solution, and added 0.1mg/mL, 0.25mg/mL and 1.0mg/mL of forest gymnemic acid, and measured the glucose concentration in the circulating fluid. The glucose concentration in the initial perfusion fluid was 90mg/100ml. The test results show that as the concentration of GA increases, the absorption of glucose gradually decreases; when GA is added at the same time, the absorption of glucose is the least. In addition, the GA oral glucose load test on humans was also compared. When 75g of glucose and 50mgGA were given at the same time, the blood sugar level decreased slightly compared with the control group (only 75g of glucose), but the difference was not large. Only the inhibitory effect on insulin secretion was particularly obvious (P<0.01), especially at 30min, the difference was most significant (P<0.05). This shows that forest gymnemic acid has a certain preventive and therapeutic effect on diabetes.
4. Anti-caries
Studies have found that in the culture medium of Streptococcus mutans, if sucrose is present, a large amount of viscous insoluble glucan will be produced after culturing at 37°C for 24 hours, and when forest gymnemic acid is present at the same time, the production of this glucan will be significantly inhibited. According to the experimental results, when there is no sucrose, the culture medium is transparent, and after adding 1% sucrose, it is turbid and precipitated; when 0.1 mg/ml of forest gymnemic acid is added, it is slightly turbid and has a small amount of precipitation; when 1 mg/ml of forest gymnemic acid is added, the culture medium is completely transparent and has no precipitation. This shows that forest gymnemic acid can inhibit the reproduction of Streptococcus mutans in the presence of sucrose and the insoluble glucan and lactic acid that cause caries.
5. Other functions
Forest gymnemic acid also has the functions of treating infectious diseases/stomachic, stimulating appetite, laxative and diuretic. According to the ancient Indian Ayurvedic medical text, the decoction of the leaves of this plant can be taken orally and heated with sesame oil to make an emulsion, which can be used as eye drops to treat eye diseases.
