Octisalate

Octisalate, also known as 2-Ethylhexyl salicylate, has the chemical formula C15H22O3, a molecular weight of 250.33, and CAS number 118-60-5. At room temperature, it is a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a density of 1.014 g/cm³ (25℃), a boiling point of 189-190℃ (21 mmHg)/138-148℃ (at normal pressure), and a refractive index of 1.502. It is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol but insoluble in water. It should be stored in a sealed, light-protected, cool place, avoiding contact with strong oxidizing agents.

Octisalate is mainly produced through the esterification reaction of salicylic acid and isooctanol under concentrated sulfuric acid catalysis. As a UV absorber, it can absorb UVB radiation (280-300 nm) and is widely used in sunscreens, cosmetics (addition amount 3%-5%), shampoo anti-fading agents, and plastic anti-aging agents. Product specifications include 100mg to 200mg powder and solution forms, and must be stored at -20℃ to -80℃ according to purity grade.

UV Absorption and Sun Protection

As a UV absorber, it absorbs ultraviolet rays in the 280-320nm wavelength range (especially UVB). Through a photochemical reaction, it generates 2-hydroxybenzophenone, which has strong UV absorption capabilities, converting UV energy into heat energy, thus protecting the skin from UV damage and preventing sunburn, sun damage, and tanning. It is commonly used in sunscreen cosmetics.

Anti-Fading

Added to personal care products such as shampoos and hair dyes, it absorbs ultraviolet rays, reducing the damage of UV rays to hair pigments or dyes, thus preventing fading and maintaining hair color.

Promoting Transdermal Absorption

In pharmaceutical preparations, isooctyl salicylate can act as a transdermal absorption enhancer. By altering the structure of the stratum corneum or increasing the solubility of drugs in the skin, it promotes the transdermal penetration of drugs (such as estradiol), improving drug bioavailability.

Material Protection

In the industrial field, it can be added to materials such as plastics, inks, and coatings to absorb ultraviolet rays, delaying problems such as aging, discoloration, and performance degradation caused by ultraviolet radiation, and improving the weather resistance and stability of the materials.

Sunscreen Cosmetics

As a UVB absorber, it is used in sunscreens, sun sprays, lotions, and foundations, with a typical addition level of 3%–5%.

Daily Chemicals and Skincare Products
Used in moisturizers, lipsticks, shampoos, and anti-fading agents to adjust the spreadability and feel of the formula and provide photoprotection.

Other Uses

Used as a UV stabilizer in perfumes, soaps, and other daily chemical products to prevent degradation of ingredients due to light exposure.

Additional Notes

• Octisalate salicylate is also known as octyl salicylate and is commonly used in international cosmetic ingredient nomenclature.
• It has good lipid solubility and extremely low water solubility (solubility approximately 74.4 μg/L at 20℃), therefore it is suitable for oil-phase systems.
