Product Description

Butylene glycol, also known as 1,3-butanediol, is a mild polyol used in cosmetics and skincare products. It is considered relatively safe (risk factor 1) and generally has no adverse effects on pregnant women. Butylene glycol is not comedogenic.

It is a moisturizer and solvent, and a mild polyol. Commonly used in skincare products as a small-molecule moisturizing ingredient, it helps retain moisture in the stratum corneum. It has good hygroscopic properties, absorbing up to 12.5% (at 50% relative humidity) and 38.5% (at 80% relative humidity) of its own weight. It also has some antibacterial properties.

What are the benefits?

1. Moisturizing and Hydrating:

Butylene glycol has strong hygroscopic properties, absorbing moisture from the air and locking it in on the skin's surface to form a moisturizing film. This reduces moisture evaporation from the stratum corneum, relieving dryness, tightness, and flaking, leaving skin soft and supple.

Its gentle formula is suitable for sensitive or dry skin. It can alleviate discomfort such as dryness, itching, and redness, and is often used as an alcohol substitute in soothing products.

Long-term use helps strengthen the skin's natural defenses, improves the skin barrier function, protects the skin from external stimuli and damage, and makes the skin healthier and more elastic.

4. Promotes Active Ingredient Absorption:

As a small-molecule solvent, it can dissolve other active ingredients that are not easily soluble in water and soften the stratum corneum structure, improving skin permeability. This helps active ingredients such as Vitamin C and niacinamide penetrate deeper into the skin, enhancing the skincare effect.

5. Regulates Moisture Balance:

It can reduce the stickiness of the skin, leaving it feeling refreshed after use without feeling heavy or burdensome. Suitable for oily or combination skin.

6. Antibacterial and preservative properties:

It has an inhibitory effect on some bacteria and molds, which can extend the shelf life of cosmetics, reduce microbial growth, reduce the risk of infection, and at the same time reduce the amount of traditional preservatives used, thus reducing the risk of irritation.

Butanediol has two main isomers: 1,4-butanediol and 1,3-butanediol, each with different applications. The main application areas are as follows:

Textiles and Apparel: Used in the production of spandex (Lycra fiber), a key raw material for functional fabrics such as sportswear and medical textiles (e.g., surgical gowns, bandages), accounting for approximately 32%.
New Energy Batteries: Catalytically amination produces N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP), used as a solvent for lithium battery electrode binders, benefiting from the development of the new energy vehicle industry, accounting for approximately 32%.
Biodegradable Plastics: As a key comonomer in polybutylene terephthalate (PBAT) and polybutylene succinate (PBS), used to replace traditional plastic packaging, agricultural films, etc., accounting for approximately 29%.
Engineering Plastics: Condensation polymerization with terephthalic acid produces polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), used in automotive electronics, home appliance components, and mechanical parts, accounting for approximately 14%. Pharmaceuticals and Chemicals: Used in the synthesis of pharmaceutical intermediates such as Vitamin B1 and γ-butyrolactone (GBL), as well as chemical products such as pesticides and herbicides, accounting for approximately 8%.
Polyurethane Elastomers: Used in high-speed rail track cushioning materials, mining conveyor belts, and automotive dashboards, accounting for approximately 5%.
Coatings and Additives: Improves coating adhesion and weather resistance, used in high-end automotive paints, accounting for approximately 3%.

Applications of 1,3-Butanediol

Cosmetics: Used as a moisturizer, solvent, and penetration enhancer in skincare products such as facial cleansers, toners, lotions, and creams, providing hygroscopic, antibacterial, and skin-feel-improving effects, accounting for approximately 70%.
Pharmaceuticals: Used as a pharmaceutical intermediate in the synthesis of certain drugs, but the scale of application is relatively small.
Chemicals: Used in the synthesis of resins, plasticizers, lubricants, etc., improving material properties.
