Processing Characteristics of Liposome Glutathione

Liposome Encapsulation Technology: Utilizing a phospholipid bilayer, glutathione is encapsulated into nanoscale vesicles, giving it a cell membrane-like structure that effectively protects its active ingredient.

Improved Stability and Absorption: Liposomes protect glutathione from degradation by gastric acid and digestive enzymes, helping it cross the gastrointestinal barrier and directly enter the bloodstream, thus improving bioavailability.

Cold Processing: Low-temperature processing is typically used to ensure that the activity of glutathione is not destroyed while maintaining the integrity of the liposome structure.

Highly Efficient Delivery System: Liposomes, with their cell membrane-like structure, can directly enter cells through the cell membrane, enhancing the targeted delivery of glutathione.

Bioavailability

Glutathione encapsulated in liposomes exhibits a significant absorption advantage compared to traditional oral forms, with a bioavailability exceeding 80%. Traditional oral glutathione suffers from poor breakdown and absorption in the digestive tract, resulting in a bioavailability often below 10%. The application of liposome technology not only facilitates its passage across the digestive tract barrier but also avoids metabolic losses during transport, ensuring a higher in vivo active concentration.

What is Liposomal Glutathione?

Liposomal Glutathione is an exciting glutathione product that is formulated using liposomal technology. Liposomes are spheres made of phospholipids – the main building blocks of cell membranes. Due to this structure, liposomes easily bind to cell membranes to facilitate the intracellular delivery of their nutrients. Due to this enhanced delivery and absorption, nutrients delivered in liposomal form offer superior absorption and bioavailability.

Glutathione

Liposomal glutathione is glutathione encapsulated in liposomes, with the aim of increasing the body's absorption rate of glutathione and enhancing its stability. In a pilot clinical study, 12 healthy subjects supplemented with 500 mg and 1 g of liposomal glutathione per day, respectively. It was found that both doses of liposomal glutathione could be effectively absorbed and increase blood and cell glutathione levels, reducing the body's oxidative stress. After 2 weeks of supplementation, cellular and plasma glutathione levels were increased by 25% and 28% respectively, and the GSH/GSSG ratio was increased by 20%.

What are the benefits?

1. Antioxidant effect
One of the benefits of glutathione is that it can effectively scavenge free radicals both directly and through enzymatic reactions. It can also maintain exogenous antioxidants such as vitamins C and E in their reduced (i.e. active) form. However, the efficiency of the glutathione redox system decreases with age.

2. DetoxificationLiposomal Glutathione Powder
Glutathione is a substrate for reactions catalyzed by glutathione S-transferases; a family of enzymes that catalyze the addition of glutathione to a substrate so that it can be eliminated. Conjugation with glutathione is an important Phase II detoxification pathway in the liver - glutathione is a hydrophilic (water-soluble) molecule that conjugates to various lipophilic (fat-soluble) physiological metabolites (e.g., estrogens) and xenobiotics, biotransforming them so that they can be excreted in the bile and then eliminated in the feces. Similarly, glutathione can also be conjugated and exported to the plasma for elimination through the urine. Therefore, in these reactions, glutathione is "lost" from the system rather than recycled. Glutathione can also participate in non-enzymatic conjugation with certain chemicals.

3. Neurodegenerative diseases
Dysregulation of glutathione homeostasis and alterations in the activity of glutathione-dependent enzymes are closely associated with neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease.
Apoptosis (programmed cell death) is key to the progression of neurodegenerative diseases, and there is evidence that mitochondrial glutathione levels may play a key role in regulating this process.
Another mechanism by which glutathione affects neurodegenerative diseases is through the regulation of protein degradation pathways, which are involved in regulating cell survival.

4. Benefits of glutathione for eye health
Glutathione is present in high concentrations in the lens, especially in the epithelial layer, where it has many important functions, including helping to maintain lens transparency by preventing the formation of high molecular weight crystal aggregates, clearing xenobiotics, and preventing oxidative damage. A study of human lenses from birth to 92 years of age showed that glutathione levels decreased to 73% over the years, and oxidized glutathione levels (i.e., "consumed" glutathione) increased from 2% to 18%.

5. Benefits of Glutathione for Oral Health
Glutathione is an important redox regulator in saliva, and its maintenance is essential for periodontal health. Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with increased inflammation caused by dental plaque biofilm (produced by bacteria), excessive production of ROS, and reduced antioxidant activity in saliva, leading to loss of periodontal and bone support.

Advantages Compared to Traditional Glutathione

1. High Bioavailability
Traditional Glutathione: Its bioavailability after gastrointestinal absorption is low, typically less than 10%. Most glutathione is broken down into amino acids by gastric acid and digestive enzymes, making complete absorption into the bloodstream difficult.

Liposomes: Encapsulated in a phospholipid bilayer, glutathione avoids degradation by gastric acid and enzymes, increasing bioavailability to over 80%, allowing more active ingredients to enter the bloodstream and act on cells.

2. Higher Stability
Traditional Glutathione: Susceptible to environmental factors (such as light, oxygen, and temperature), it degrades rapidly and has poor stability.

Liposomes: Encapsulated in liposomes, environmental factors reduce the damage to the active substance, significantly improving product stability and shelf life.

3. Targeted Delivery
Traditional Glutathione: After absorption, it enters the bloodstream in free form and may decompose during systemic distribution, failing to precisely target specific tissues or cells.

Liposomes: Liposomes have a structure similar to cell membranes, allowing them to directly cross cell membranes and deliver glutathione to target cells, resulting in more precise and efficient action.Liposomal Glutathione Powder

4. Protection of Active Ingredients
Traditional Glutathione: The active ingredient is easily lost during transport, requiring high doses to ensure effectiveness.

Liposomes: The liposome layer effectively protects glutathione from damage caused by stomach acid, digestive enzymes, and oxidation, thus maintaining its activity.

5. Lower Dosage Requirements
Traditional Glutathione: To achieve the desired effect, higher doses are usually required, but high doses may increase costs or cause gastrointestinal discomfort.

Liposomes: Due to their high absorption efficiency, lower doses can achieve effects comparable to high doses of traditional glutathione, offering better cost-effectiveness.

6. Convenient Administration
Traditional Glutathione: While injectable glutathione has good absorption, it requires professional administration; oral absorption is poor.

Liposomes: Usually in liquid, capsule, or softgel form, they are convenient to take and have high absorption rates, reducing the inconvenience of injections.

Applications

Liposomal Glutathione Supplements
Oral glutathione supplementation has been difficult because glutathione is a tripeptide that is broken down into its constituent amino acids by proteases in the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, if it survives intact, there are problems with transport across cell membranes. Therefore, supplements need to be in a "liposomal" form - liposomes that resist digestion and can be efficiently transported across cell membranes.

Health Benefits of Oral Liposome Glutathione: Scientific Evidence

Liposome glutathione, through encapsulation delivery technology, overcomes the limitations of traditional oral glutathione, which suffers from low absorption and easy breakdown by the gastrointestinal tract. Clinical studies show that oral liposomal glutathione can dose-dependently increase glutathione reserves in the blood and tissue cells, with the increase positively correlated with the intake dose. This discovery solves the problem of the effectiveness of glutathione supplementation, ensuring the body receives sufficient antioxidant raw materials.

Actual increase in glutathione concentration in the body with different doses of supplementation

Based on the recovery of glutathione levels, the study further observed a significant decrease in oxidative stress markers in the subjects. This indicates that sufficient glutathione reserves can effectively neutralize free radicals generated by metabolism and exogenous factors, reduce lipid peroxidation damage, and thus reduce the continuous oxidative burden on the liver and other tissues.

Furthermore, after liposomal glutathione supplementation, the activity of natural killer cells in the subjects was significantly enhanced. This increased activity signifies enhanced immune surveillance, contributing to the establishment of long-term tissue homeostasis and providing deeper immune support for the normal metabolism of the liver and other organs.
