What are the benefits?
D-pantothenic Acid is converted into coenzyme A (CoA) or acyl carrier protein (ACP) in the body to participate in fatty acid metabolism reactions. CoA is a cofactor for more than 70 enzymes in organisms (accounting for about 4% of the total enzyme amount), and bacteria also need CoA to build cell walls. In metabolism, CoA mainly plays the role of acyl carrier, participates in sugar, fat, protein and energy metabolism, and can also affect the localization, stability and activity of proteins by modifying proteins. CoA provides 90% of the energy for organisms.
Vitamin B5 is a necessary substance for the synthesis of steroids from fatty acids; it can also participate in the synthesis of steroid porphyrin, melatonin and heme; it is also an intermediate necessary for the metabolism of citric acid cycle, choline acetylation, antibody synthesis, etc. in the body. Therefore, vitamin B5 can act on normal epithelial organs such as nerves, adrenal glands, digestive tract and skin in the body to improve the resistance of animals to pathogens. Vitamin B5 can also increase the biosynthesis of glutathione to slow down cell apoptosis and damage. Experiments have shown that vitamin B5 has a good protective effect on cells and rats damaged by lipid peroxidation. Pantethylthioethylamine can reduce the concentration of cholesterol and triglycerides. Vitamin B5 and its derivatives can also reduce the toxic side effects caused by drugs such as antibiotics, and participate in the absorption and utilization of various nutrients.
Biosynthesis of pantothenic acid
Vitamin B5 is produced by four-step enzymatic reactions of α-ketoisovalerate and L-aspartate. Finally, ATP provides energy to connect β-Ala and pantothenic acid to produce vitamin B5 under the catalysis of pantothenic acid synthase. The pantothenic acid-deficient strain of E. coli proved that the biosynthetic pathway of pantothenic acid is a branch of L-Val biosynthesis. Therefore, if microorganisms lose the ability to synthesize L-Val, β-Ala or cysteine, they will not be able to synthesize vitamin B5.
Although the cell membrane is not permeable to exogenous vitamin B5, it can transport extracellular vitamin B5 into the cell with the help of pantothenic acid permease, so higher animals can directly use the vitamin B5 already in vitro. In addition, in nature, the body fluids or cell fluids of animals also contain higher homologues of vitamin B5 called "homopantothenic acid". It is produced from pantothenic acid and 4-aminobutyric acid, which is mainly produced by decarboxylation of L-Glu under the catalysis of Glu decarboxylase (EC 4.1.115).
