Main ingredients


The protein content in the dry matter of mussels is as high as 59.1%, and the amino acid composition is complete. The essential amino acid content accounts for 33.2% of the total amino acid content, which is much higher than that of eggs, chickens, ducks, fish, shrimps and meat. In addition to 20 common amino acids, it also contains β-aminobutyric acid, ornithine, taurine and other amino acids. These amino acids are mostly in free form in the tissues and organs of mussels and have important physiological activities. In particular, it is rich in natural taurine. Studies have shown that the physiological functions of taurine involve the retina, central nervous system, cardiovascular system, hepatobiliary system, endocrine system, etc., and participate in various metabolic processes in the human body. Taurine has the effects of anti-inflammatory, detoxification, liver protection and gallbladder, lowering blood lipids, promoting brain development in young children, and calming the nerves and strengthening the brain.Protocatechuic acid (PCA) is an organic compound with a molecular formula of (HO)2C6H3COOH and a molecular weight of 154.12. It is a white to brown crystalline powder that changes color in the air. It is soluble in 50 parts of water; soluble in ethanol and ether. It exists in the leaves of Stenoloma chusanum (L.) Ching, a plant of the Lepidoptera family, and the leaves of Ilex chi-nensis Sims, a plant of the Aquifoliaceae family.

 

Pharmacological effects

 

1. Anti-rheumatic effect: Biochemical scientists at the Royal Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Australia, have found that the green-lipped mussels in New Zealand contain an active substance with anti-inflammatory effects. This active substance may become an effective drug for the treatment of rheumatism. According to the Japanese "Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun", unprocessed green-lipped mussel extracts contain an active ingredient that has anti-inflammatory functions. The results of experts' measurements show that this active ingredient is a special protein. Australian scientists have conducted experiments and feasibility studies on the value of this active substance as an anti-rheumatic drug. They believe that this substance in green-lipped mussels may be of great significance in the future treatment of rheumatism.

2. Anti-inflammatory effect, Lyprinol, a fat extract of green-lipped mussels in New Zealand, has good anti-inflammatory activity, and the effective dose is lower than that of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, equivalent to only 0.5% of fish oil. This anti-inflammatory activity is related to the polyunsaturated fatty acids and natural antioxidants (such as carotenoids) it contains. Lyprinol is not as gastrotoxic as cyclooxygenase inhibitors (such as aspirin and meclofenamic acid). In mouse experiments, it is still non-gastric toxic at a dose of 300*10-6 and does not affect platelet aggregation. It was found that after 5 weeks of feeding dogs with green-lipped mussel meat powder, the experimental group had significantly improved joint pain and joint swelling compared with the control group. Clinical studies have also shown that Lyprinol has a significant effect on improving the symptoms of osteoarthritis patients. After 4 weeks and 8 weeks of treatment, 53% and 80% of the patients had reduced symptoms and improved joint function, respectively, and there were no adverse reactions during the treatment.

3. Treatment of asthma
Studies have shown that Lyprinol, a fat extract of green-lipped mussels in New Zealand, has the effect of treating asthma. Lyprinol can inhibit the biosynthesis of eicosanoids (leukotrienes and prostaglandins) by inhibiting lipoxygenase (LOX) and cyclooxygenase. Clinical trials have shown that Lyprinol can effectively reduce daytime wheezing and exhaled hydrogen peroxide concentrations and increase morning peak expiratory flow (PEF) without obvious side effects.
