What are citrus bioflavonoids?

Bioflavonoids are a natural plant nutrient and a water-soluble compound in plants. They are natural pigments found in leaves, flowers, and fruits of plants. They are widely found in nature and are called bioflavonoids because they are mostly yellow.
Citrus bioflavonoids are powerful antioxidants. In recent years, scientists have discovered that bioflavonoids have many biological effects, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-aging, and anti-mutation effects. The human body cannot synthesize them on its own and must obtain them from food. They are mainly derived from citrus fruits such as lemons and grapefruits.
Bioflavonoids (bioflavonoids), or vitamin P, are secondary metabolites of plants. They are not a single compound, but a general term for a variety of substances with similar structures and active substances. They are called bioflavonoids because they are mostly yellow. The main vitamin P compounds include flavonoids, rutin, hesperidin, etc., which are water-soluble vitamins.

What are the benefits?

Oxygen free radicals in the body are an important cause of human aging. The strong antioxidant function of citrus bioflavonoids can effectively remove free radicals and protect cells throughout the body from free radical damage, which has a significant effect on delaying human aging.

Benefits of bioflavonoids

The main function of vitamin P is to maintain the normal permeability of the capillary wall. Lack of it will increase the permeability of the capillary wall, so it is also called a permeability vitamin.

In nature, the vitamin P contained in bioflavonoids often coexists with vitamin C to prevent vitamin C from being oxidized and damaged, and enhance the effect of vitamin C. Under its "protection", the body will not consume vitamin C for no reason. Once scurvy occurs in the human body, it is considered to be the result of a common deficiency of these two vitamins. Therefore, vitamin P is being used clinically to prevent and treat certain diseases caused by increased capillary permeability. In addition to the field of clinical medical research, the vitamin P component contained in bioflavonoids is now also widely used in skin care products, original liquids, and cosmetics.

Main effects of bioflavonoids
1. It has the effects of scavenging free radicals and anti-oxidation.
2. It has anti-thrombotic, cardiovascular and cerebrovascular protection, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects.
3. It has multiple effects such as relieving alcohol poisoning and protecting the liver.
4. It has the effects of clearing away heat and detoxification, removing rheumatism, strengthening muscles and bones, etc.
5. The role of regulating immunity
Flavonoids can enhance the body's non-specific immune function and humoral immune function.
6. Anti-menopausal syndrome
Although the biological activity of flavonoids in the body is only 10-3 to 10-5 times that of endogenous estrogen, it has a huge concentration advantage, which can reach 103 times that of endogenous estrogen. Proper use can not only alleviate menopausal symptoms, but also avoid the potential risk of uterine and breast lesions caused by long-term sex hormone treatment.
7. Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects
Flavonoids contain more antibacterial components and have a wide range of inhibition on bacteria. It has been reported that 0.005% free isoflavones can inhibit fungal activity. As the concentration increases, the antibacterial activity continues to increase, but after the concentration exceeds 0.1%, the concentration increase no longer has a significant synergistic effect.
8. Antiviral effect
The antibacterial and antiviral effects of flavonoids have been recognized by the medical community.
9. Antioxidant effect
Bioflavonoids are also very effective antioxidants; they can bind to toxic metals and excrete them from the body.

Preparation

The method for preparing citrus flavonoids from citrus peel comprises the following steps:

(1) The crushed citrus peel and an ethanol aqueous solution with a concentration of 50-95 v/v% are placed in an extractor at a weight ratio of 1:1-5, extracted under reflux for 0.5-1 hour, and filtered. For sufficient extraction, the step can be repeated several times, and the recommended number of extractions is three times (the total weight ratio of citrus peel to ethanol aqueous solution with a concentration of 50-95 v/v% is 1:3-15). The filtrates obtained by filtration are combined and concentrated to obtain a citrus peel extract, and the obtained citrus peel extract is then suspended in water and centrifuged to obtain a clear filtrate.

(2) At 20-30° C., firstly, the clarified filtrate obtained from step (1) is passed through an adsorption column filled with a pretreated polystyrene or cross-linked acrylonitrile adsorption resin having a particle size of 0.3-1.25 mm (the diameter to height ratio of the adsorption column is preferably 1:3-30) at a flow rate of 1.5-8 BV/h; then, water is passed through the adsorption column at a flow rate of 5-10 BV/h; finally, methanol, ethanol or acetone, or/and an aqueous solution thereof is passed through the adsorption column at a flow rate of 2-10 BV/h (elution), and the obtained liquid (eluate) is collected and concentrated to obtain the target substance (citrus flavonoids). The content of water-soluble flavonoids in the obtained citrus flavonoids is higher than 95 wt% (measured by UV method), and the content of fat-soluble flavonoids is higher than 15 wt% (measured by HPLC method).
