Benefits and Effects
Specifically, lemon balm extract has been widely studied and shown to offer several potential benefits:
relieve Stress and Anxiety
Lemon balm extract acts as a mild sedative with anti-anxiety properties; it helps improve mood and effectively relieves stress.
In a study using mice, an animal model of depression was induced via chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS). Depression-like behaviors were assessed using the sucrose preference test, the open-field test, and the forced swim test; the results showed that lemon balm leaf extract increased spontaneous locomotor activity and enhanced interest in stimuli.[1]
Postoperative anxiety and sleep disturbances are common conditions. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted involving 80 hospitalized patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting. Patients were randomly assigned to either a traditional Chinese medicine group or a placebo group. The treatment group received capsules containing 500 mg of dried *Melissa officinalis* L. (lemon balm) leaf powder, while the placebo group received capsules containing wheat starch; both were administered three times daily. Sleep quality and anxiety levels served as the primary outcome measures. The results demonstrated that a seven-day regimen of 1.5 g of dried lemon balm leaf powder daily reduced anxiety levels by 49% and improved sleep quality by 54% in patients following coronary artery bypass surgery.[2]
Antidepressant Effects
Some studies suggest that lemon balm extract may possess antidepressant properties and provide emotional support.
Digestive Support
Lemon balm can be used to alleviate issues such as indigestion, stomach cramps, and gastrointestinal discomfort.
Antibacterial and Antiviral Properties
Lemon balm extract has demonstrated inhibitory effects against various bacteria and viruses.
Antioxidant Properties
Lemon balm extract offers antioxidant benefits, such as scavenging free radicals and helping to delay the aging process.
Impact on SOD
Research indicates that lemon balm extract can boost SOD activity and help reduce the accumulation of superoxide radicals, thereby mitigating oxidative stress-induced damage to cells and tissues.
Blood Sugar and Lipid-Lowering Effects
Studies using *in vitro* adipocyte models and mouse models of high-fat diet-induced insulin resistance have evaluated the effects of lemon balm ethanol extract on blood glucose, insulin resistance, and dyslipidemia. The results showed that the extract lowered blood glucose levels and improved dyslipidemia in animal models, suggesting its potential value as an adjunct intervention for type 2 diabetes and related metabolic syndromes.[3]
