Chemical Structure

• Formed by the esterification reaction of cetyl alcohol (hexadecyl alcohol) and octanoic acid, with the molecular formula C₂₄H₄₈O₂ and a molecular weight of approximately 368.64.

Physical Properties

• At room temperature, it is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a density of approximately 0.86 g/cm³, a boiling point of approximately 414.2℃ (760 mmHg), and a flash point of approximately 209.9℃.
• It is insoluble in water but soluble in many organic solvents, such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform.

Uses

• In cosmetics: Commonly used as an emollient and skin conditioner, it provides a moisturizing, non-greasy feel, enhances the skin's water absorption capacity, and improves product texture and stability. It is frequently used in face creams, lotions, lipsticks, and other skincare and makeup products.
• Industrial Applications: It can be used as a lubricant, plasticizer, or solvent in the formulation of certain industrial products.

Safety

• Generally considered to be highly safe, but some people may experience acne-causing effects. Those with sensitive skin should observe the effects carefully before use.

Moisturizing and Hydrating

It forms a thin oil film on the skin's surface, reducing moisture evaporation, helping the skin retain moisture, and alleviating dryness and flaking. It is especially suitable for dry skin or skin care in dry environments.
