Products Description
Zinc citrate is a white, odorless, tasteless powder, slightly soluble in water, and soluble in dilute mineral acids and alkali hydroxides. It is an organic zinc supplement with low stomach irritation, high zinc content, and participation in the tricarboxylic acid cycle in the body. Furthermore, it is more easily absorbed than the zinc found in milk.
It can be synthesized using a hydrothermal method from citric acid and zinc hydroxide. The product is in the form of microspheres with nanosheets on the surface, containing zinc-oxygen bonds and 10 molecules of water of crystallization. Its bioavailability is superior to zinc oxide and comparable to zinc gluconate. Zinc citrate may be added to the World Health Organization's recommended list of water-soluble zinc compounds due to its superior sensory properties.
Chemical Properties
- The chemical formula is usually Zn3(C6H5O7)2⋅2H2O (Zn3(C6H5O7)2⋅2H2O) (dihydrate) or Zn3(C6H5O7)2⋅3H2O (Zn3(C6H5O7)2⋅3H2O) (trihydrate), with molecular weights of approximately 610.4 and 628.29, respectively.
- It appears as a white crystalline powder, odorless and tasteless, slightly soluble in water, and soluble in dilute inorganic acids.
What are the benefits?
- Zinc Supplementation: Zinc is an essential trace element for the human body, participating in the synthesis and activation of various enzymes. Zinc citrate effectively supplements zinc and is suitable for zinc-deficient individuals, such as children, the elderly, vegetarians, and those with irregular eating habits.
- Promoting Growth and Development: Zinc participates in the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids, playing a crucial role in the height growth, weight gain, intellectual development, and secondary physical development of children and adolescents, helping to maintain a normal growth rate.
- Enhancing Immunity: Zinc enhances the activity of immune cells, promotes the synthesis of immunoglobulins, improves the body's resistance, helps the body fight off pathogens, and reduces the occurrence of infectious diseases.
- Improving Taste and Appetite: Zinc has a significant impact on taste and smell; zinc deficiency can lead to dulled taste and decreased appetite. Zinc citrate can supplement zinc, improve taste sensitivity, increase appetite, and alleviate loss of appetite and anorexia.
- Promotes wound healing: Zinc participates in collagen synthesis and cell repair. Zinc citrate can accelerate wound healing, promote fibroblast proliferation and collagen formation, and aid in the recovery of wounds such as external injuries and surgical incisions.
- Maintains vision: Zinc is abundant in the retina and plays an important role in maintaining normal visual function. It helps prevent eye diseases such as night blindness and macular degeneration, protecting vision.
- Promotes vitamin A metabolism: Zinc participates in the metabolism of vitamin A, promoting the mobilization of vitamin A in the liver and improving the absorption and transport efficiency of vitamin A. This helps maintain the normal function of tissues such as skin and mucous membranes.
- Improves skin health: Zinc can regulate sebum secretion, reducing excessive sebum production and preventing skin problems such as acne. It also promotes skin cell renewal and repair, resulting in healthier and smoother skin.
Application areas
Food Industry
- Nutritional Fortification: As a zinc supplement, it is added to infant formula, modified milk powder, cereal products, soy flour, rice and its products to help supplement the body's essential zinc, especially suitable for children, pregnant women, the elderly, and other groups prone to zinc deficiency.
- Processing Aid: In fruit juice beverages, it can chelate metal ions, prevent polyphenol oxidation and browning, and maintain the bright color and clarity of the juice; in gummy candy manufacturing, it can improve gel structure, prevent aging and hardening, and extend shelf life; in biscuit production, it can adjust the pH value of the dough, improve taste and texture, and make biscuits crisper.

Pharmaceutical Field
- Zinc Supplementation Therapy: Used to treat zinc deficiency-related growth retardation, malnutrition, anorexia, pica, oral ulcers, etc. in children. It is also suitable for patients with weak gastrointestinal function, as it is gentle on the stomach and suitable for long-term use.
- Adjunctive Therapy: Studies have shown that zinc citrate may have some auxiliary effects in maintaining bone health, enhancing immunity, and improving prostate function.
Daily Chemical Industry
- Oral Care: Used in oral care products such as toothpaste and mouthwash, it has the effects of anti-tartar, anti-inflammatory and antibacterial, and fresh breath, and can effectively prevent the formation of gingivitis and tartar.
