Palmitic Acid

Palmitic acid is a white, crystalline, scaly substance with a slightly distinctive odor and taste. It is a saturated higher fatty acid, widely found in animal and vegetable oils as glycerides, and is abundant in nature. Palm oil, palm kernel oil, butter, cheese, milk, meat, and various vegetable oils all contain this fatty acid, and it is also quite abundant in breast milk.

Basic Properties

• Chemical Characteristics: Molecular formula C16H32O2, CAS number 57-10-3, white solid at room temperature, melting point 61-64℃, insoluble in water, readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether.
• Natural Distribution: Widely found in natural oils, with approximately 40% in palm oil and up to 60% in tallow tree oil. It is also present in animal fats and dairy fats.

Energy Supply

Palmic acid, as a fatty acid, generates a large amount of ATP through β-oxidation metabolism, making it an important energy source. One gram of palmitic acid provides approximately 9 kilocalories of energy, supporting daily activities and basal metabolism.

Cellular Structural Composition
Palmic acid is an important component of cell membrane phospholipids, helping to maintain cell membrane fluidity and participating in signal transduction. Palmitization modification (attached palmitic acid) of certain proteins can also affect their localization and function.

Skin Protective Effects
In skincare products, palmitic acid and its derivatives (such as palmitate esters) act as emollients and emulsifiers, strengthening the skin barrier, locking in moisture, and improving the texture of creams.

• In food, palmitic acid is found in meat and dairy products (50-60% of total fat), cocoa butter (26%), and olive oil (8-20%). As the name suggests, palmitic acid (PA) is a significant component of palm oil (44% of total fat). Furthermore, PA accounts for 20-30% of the total fat in breast milk.
• Physiologically, the accumulation of palmitic acid is offset because a portion of it is usually modified into palmitoleic acid, inserting a double bond (16:1) or elongating to form stearic acid (18:0) and further unsaturating to form oleic acid (OA, 18:1).

• Soap Base Raw Material: Sodium palmitate is one of the main components of soap, providing gentle cleansing and foam stabilizing properties.
• Emulsifiers and Thickeners: Used in face creams, lotions, hand creams, etc., to adjust texture and feel on the skin, and enhance product stability and spreadability.
• Makeup Stabilizers: Improve the adhesion, stability, and color longevity of makeup products such as lipsticks and pressed powders.

Food Industry

• Mold Release Agents and Anti-sticking Agents: Used for releasing molds of candies, chocolates, and baked goods to prevent sticking.
• Emulsifiers and Anti-caking Agents: Used in food processing as emulsifiers to improve the uniformity of ingredient mixing, or as anti-caking agents to prevent powdered foods from clumping.
• Coating Agents: Used for fruit preservation, forming a protective film to extend shelf life.
