What is Hydroquinone?

Hydroquinone is also known as 1,4-benzenediol. Molecular formula C6H6O2. Molecular weight 110.11. Colorless or white crystals. It changes color easily when exposed to light in the air. Its aqueous solution can oxidize to brown in the air, and oxidizes faster in alkaline medium. Melting point 170-171℃, boiling point 285-287℃, relative density 1.33215, UVλmax 288nm in water. It is easily soluble in hot water, ethanol and ether, and slightly soluble in benzene. It has active chemical properties and is easily oxidized. It can also undergo esterification, substitution and other reactions.
Hydroquinone is an important organic developer and can only work in a strong alkaline solution. The reduction speed is slower than that of metol, but once the image appears, the density increases rapidly, and a larger contrast can be obtained. The fastest development temperature is 27°~29℃, slows down below 15℃, and almost stops below 5℃. Large amounts can make the photo produce warm words. Used as ordinary photographic developer; physical developer and redeveloper reducing agent. It is usually used in combination with phenidone and metol.

Chemical properties

1. Solubility: Soluble in polar solvents such as water, alcohol and ether. It has a high solubility in water and can form a stable solution.
2. Oxidizing property: It is a strong oxidant that can oxidize many substances in the presence of oxygen. It can be reduced to quinone.
3. Condensation reaction: It has the characteristics of condensation reaction and can undergo condensation reaction with certain compounds to form compounds with specific functions.

The most effective whitening ingredient

Hydroquinone was first discovered in 1820.
In 1936, Heinz Oettel discovered that hydroquinone has the effect of lightening spots. Since then, it has been widely used as a whitening agent in the medical field to treat other pigmentation diseases such as chloasma.

Hydroquinone, an antioxidant, mainly inhibits tyrosinase activity through chelation (reducing tyrosinase activity by 90%), and regulates the synthesis of melanin DNA and RNA, thereby achieving the purpose of removing spots and treating post-inflammatory pigmentation.

Hydroquinone is still a very effective whitening ingredient. Dermatologists widely use hydroquinone cream to treat common pigmentary skin diseases such as chloasma, freckles, and melanosis, and hydroquinone is suitable for people with acne.

The "Chinese Expert Consensus on Chloasma Treatment (2015)" pointed out that hydroquinone and its glycoside derivatives are considered to be the first-line treatment drugs for chloasma.

Generally speaking, the effect of pigment reduction can be seen after 4 to 6 weeks of single therapy.

Main uses

1. Hydroquinone is mainly used as a photographic developer. Hydroquinone and its alkylated products are widely used as inhibitors added during the storage and transportation of monomers, and the commonly used concentration is about 200ppm.
2. Used as an antioxidant for rubber and gasoline, etc.
3. In the treatment field, hydroquinone is added to the hot water and cooling water of the closed-loop heating and cooling system to inhibit the corrosion of metals on the water side. Hydroquinone is used as a deoxidizer for boiler water. Hydroquinone is added to the boiler water during preheating and deoxygenation to remove residual dissolved oxygen.
4. It is used to manufacture anthraquinone dyes, azo dyes, and pharmaceutical raw materials.
5. It is used as a corrosion inhibitor, stabilizer, and antioxidant for detergents, and is also used in cosmetic hair dyes.
6. Photometric determination of phosphorus, magnesium, niobium, copper, silicon, and arsenic, etc. Polarographic and volumetric determination of iridium. Reducing agent for heteropolyacids, reducing agent for copper and gold
