What is calcium pantothenate?

 

Calcium pantothenate is a type of B vitamin and one of the nutrients necessary for normal growth of organisms. Calcium pantothenate exists in three forms due to its chiral carbon atom: DL-body (mixed body), D-body (dextrose body) and L-body (levorotatory body). Only D-calcium pantothenate has biological activity. It appears as white or slightly yellow needle-shaped crystals or powder, with a melting point of 195-196°C (decomposition). It is soluble in water, methanol, glycerol, slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, hygroscopic, slightly sweet, but slightly bitter. In terms of chemical stability, it is most stable in aqueous solutions with a pH value of 5 to 7. It is relatively stable in air and sunlight, but less stable in acid and alkali.
Pantothenic acid is a component of coenzyme A. It plays an important role in the metabolism of fat, protein and sugar in the body. It has the function of making antibodies and also plays an important role in maintaining the health of hair, skin and blood. The main form of pantothenic acid is D-calcium pantothenate, which is widely used in food, medicine and feed additives.
Odorless, slightly bitter; hygroscopic; aqueous solution shows neutral or weak alkaline reaction. Easily soluble in water, very slightly soluble in ethanol, almost insoluble in chloroform or ether. It has the function of producing antibodies and also plays an important role in maintaining the health of hair, skin and blood.

Limited Use

 

Pantothenic acid is widely present in food, but it will be lost in large quantities during the processing process. Therefore, D-calcium pantothenate is often added to food as a nutritional enhancer to promote human health and improve mental adaptability. In addition, D-calcium pantothenate can also be added to shochu and whiskey to enhance the flavor, added to honey to prevent winter crystallization, and can also alleviate the bitterness of caffeine and saccharin. Therefore, D-calcium pantothenate should be appropriately added to some fortified foods. The "Sanitary Standards for the Use of Food Nutrition Fortifiers" (GB14880-94) of the Ministry of Health of my country stipulates that 15-28 mg of D-calcium pantothenate (calculated as pantothenic acid) should be added to each kilogram of infant food and 2-4 mg of D-calcium pantothenate (calculated as pantothenic acid) should be added to each kilogram of drinking liquid.

 

Preparation method

 

A method for preparing calcium D-pantothenate, comprising:
Step 1: 3-aminopropionitrile and sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide aqueous solution react at 96 to 100°C, add hydrochloric acid to adjust the pH value, concentrate and crystallize to obtain crystals;
Step 2: Take the crystals obtained in step I and add methanol to dissolve, filter and collect the filtrate;
Step 3: Take the filtrate obtained in step 2 and add 732 type calcium ion exchange resin to carry out ion exchange reaction, and collect the reaction liquid;
Step 4: Take the reaction liquid obtained in step 3 and add D-pantothenate lactone to carry out acylation reaction, crystallize at -15 to -10°C, and dry to obtain calcium D-pantothenate; wherein the molar ratio of the 3-aminopropionitrile to sodium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide is 1:1.1 to 1.4, and the molar ratio of the 3-aminopropionitrile to D-pantothenate lactone is 1:1 to 1.1; the pH value is adjusted to 8.5 to 9.5 by adding hydrochloric acid in step I.
