What is baicalin?

Baicalin is a flavonoid isolated from the dried root of Scutellaria baicalensis Georgi, a dicotyledonous Lamiaceae plant. Insoluble in methanol, ethanol, acetone, slightly soluble in chloroform and nitrobenzene, almost insoluble in water, soluble in hot acetic acid. It is green in case of ferric chloride, and orange precipitate is formed in case of lead acetate. Soluble in alkali and ammonia, it turns yellow at first, and soon becomes black-brown.
