White Peony Root Extract

White peony root extract is extracted from the dried roots of the Ranunculaceae plant Paeonialactiflora Pall. The main component is paeoniflorin. The ethanol extract reduces lactate dehydrogenase activity in rats with aflatoxin-induced acute liver injury. Total peony glycosides inhibit carbon tetrachloride-induced SGPT and lactate dehydrogenase elevation and antagonize liver tissue degeneration and necrosis.

A mixture of licorice and white peony water extracts (0.21 g) significantly inhibits rabbit intestinal smooth muscle motility; combined use is superior to single use, and the effect of reducing contraction frequency (64.71% and 70.59% reduction at 20–25 minutes after administration) is superior to atropine (0.25 mg).
