Elderberry Extract

Elderberry extract is a deep purple fine powder made from the fruit of *Sambucus nigra* L., a plant in the Caprifoliaceae family, harvested in summer and autumn and dried. Its main components are anthocyanins (25%) and flavonoids (such as rutin and quercetin). Its chemical composition includes elderberry anthocyanins, anthocyanin glucosides, and moro-glucan. Detection methods include UV or HPLC. The product is an 80-mesh deep purple powder with good water solubility. The production process includes water extraction, alcohol extraction, concentration, and spray drying. Quality control requires heavy metal content below 20 ppm and no detectable pathogenic bacteria. In traditional medicine, elderberry has the effects of dispelling wind and dampness, promoting blood circulation, and stopping bleeding. It is used to treat rheumatic pain, traumatic injuries, and nephritis. It also has anti-H5N1 virus, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory activities. As a natural pigment and functional ingredient, it is widely used in acidic beverages, health products, cosmetics, and compressed candies. Unripe fruits and stems contain cyanogenic glycosides, which must be removed through processing.
