Diuretic Effect: Corn silk has traditionally been used as a diuretic, and modern research has confirmed that it can increase urine output and improve kidney function.

Hypoglycemic Effect: Animal experiments showed that after 4 weeks of treatment with corn silk extract, fasting blood glucose in diabetic mice was significantly reduced, insulin resistance was improved, hyperlipidemia was alleviated, oxidative stress was reduced, and damaged pancreatic β cells were partially restored.

Lipoid-Lowering Effect: Experiments showed that corn silk flavonoid extract had a significant regulatory effect on lipid metabolism in mice, exhibiting a dose-response relationship.

 

On August 1, 2022, a research team including members from Qiqihar Medical University published a study in *Frontiers in Nutrition* evaluating the effects of corn silk aqueous extract on lipid metabolism and gut microbiota in a high-fat diet-induced hypercholesterolemic mouse model. The experiment involved three groups: a normal diet group, a high-fat diet group, and a high-fat diet plus corn silk aqueous extract group. Mice in the intervention group received corn silk aqueous extract at a dosage of 800 mg/kg daily for eight consecutive weeks.

 

Experimental Results

After eight weeks, compared to the high-fat diet group, the final body weight of mice in the corn silk aqueous extract intervention group decreased from 29.2 ± 1.9 g to 24.4 ± 1.6 g. Serum total cholesterol levels dropped from 3.38 ± 0.39 mmol/L to 3.00 ± 0.22 mmol/L, and hepatic total cholesterol levels decreased from 6.79 ± 1.24 μmol/g to 5.70 ± 0.474 μmol/g.

 

Observations indicated that corn silk aqueous extract alleviated lipid deposition and tissue burden in the liver and adipose tissue caused by the high-fat diet. Gut microbiota analysis revealed that while a high-fat diet disrupted the structure of the gut microbiota, intervention with corn silk aqueous extract partially modulated the microbial composition and improved the intestinal micro-ecological environment. Notably, certain bacterial populations showed a negative correlation with body weight, serum total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol.

Conclusion

The study suggests that in high-fat diet-induced mouse models, corn silk aqueous extract may help reduce body weight gain and cholesterol levels, alleviate hepatic lipid deposition, and improve lipid metabolism by modulating gut microbiota. These findings demonstrate its potential application in promoting metabolic health and developing functional foods.
