Ambroxan powder(Ambroxide) possesses the typical dry aroma of ambergris, accompanied by woody, green, and tea-like notes. Originally derived from the autoxidation of ambroxol, a secretion of sperm whales, it is now primarily synthesized. Ambroxide is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and is widely used as a fixative in perfumes and cosmetic fragrances. It is also used to improve the aroma harmony of tobacco and enhance the flavor of blended cigarettes.

Currently, the main industrial method is to use salvia sclarea diterpenoid extract as raw material, which is then photo-oxidized to salvia lactone, reduced to diol, and finally dehydrated to obtain the product.

Ambroxan powder possesses a rich and distinctive ambergris aroma. It is commonly used in high-end perfumes and cosmetic fragrances. Due to its non-irritating nature to humans and lack of allergenicity in animals, it is ideal for use as a fragrance for skin, hair, and fabrics. It is frequently used in soaps, talcum powder, creams, and shampoos to add fragrance and fixative properties. The typical dosage is 0.1%-0.2%. The aroma of the freshly distilled pure product is not particularly prominent, but when diluted with alcohol to 10% and exposed to air for a period of time, the aroma becomes softer, richer, and more captivating. This product has excellent fixative properties, significantly enhancing the diffusion and penetration of fragrances. Its enhancing and elevating effects begin in the top notes of the fragrance and continue throughout the entire fragrance process.

Ambroxan powder is also widely used in cigarettes, serving as a key flavoring ingredient in oriental cigarettes and playing a crucial role in the flavor of blended cigarette smoke. It harmonizes with the characteristic flavors of tobacco and masks off-flavors. Even in small amounts, it can enhance the flavor and quality of tobacco, especially suitable for flavoring blended cigarettes and enhancing their oriental character.
