What Is Gamma Aminobutyric acid?

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), chemically known as 4-aminobutyric acid, is a naturally occurring non-protein amino acid compound widely distributed in vertebrates, plants, and microorganisms. As a water-soluble small molecule, it possesses good water solubility and thermal stability, and has passed food safety verification, making it suitable for use in beverage and various food processing industries.

In vivo, GABA is a key inhibitory neurotransmitter in the mammalian central nervous system, exhibiting significant physiological activity and participating in many important metabolic activities. GABA is highly concentrated in nerve tissue in animals, with a content of approximately 0.1–0.6 mg/g in normal brain tissue, and the highest concentration found in the substantia nigra region.

Modern research shows that moderate GABA intake helps improve sleep, assists in regulating blood pressure, and also possesses various physiological functions such as anti-anxiety, fatigue relief, and analgesia. Its biological effects are mainly mediated through three receptor subtypes: GABAA, GABAB, and GABAC receptors, making it one of the most systematically and thoroughly studied inhibitory neurotransmitters in the field of neuroscience.

What are the benefits?

Improves Sleep and Promotes Calming and Soothing

As a central inhibitory neurotransmitter, GABA can reduce neuronal excitability, promote sedation and sleep, and improve sleep quality without significant drug dependence or side effects. Higher GABA levels in the brain result in better sleep duration and quality.

Promotes Growth Hormone Secretion

It acts on the pituitary gland to promote growth hormone release, providing auxiliary benefits for children with pituitary dysfunction and insufficient growth hormone secretion, as well as for individuals requiring height management.

Anti-Anxiety and Antidepressant Effects, Soothes Nerves

It activates anti-anxiety receptors in the brain, blocks anxiety signal transmission, and inhibits excessive nerve cell excitation, thus soothing emotions and relieving anxiety and depression.

Regulates Blood Pressure and Heart Rate

It acts on the vasomotor center, dilating blood vessels and increasing blood flow, thus helping to lower blood pressure. Studies show that GABA is the core effective antihypertensive component in Astragalus membranaceus.

Activates Brain Function

It participates in brain metabolism, enhances the activity of related enzymes, dilates cerebral blood vessels, increases blood and oxygen supply, accelerates brain cell metabolism, repairs and activates brain cells, and improves brain function.

Lowering blood ammonia and protecting the liver

It inhibits glutamate decarboxylation, reduces blood ammonia accumulation, promotes ammonia metabolism and excretion, alleviates ammonia poisoning, protects liver function, and improves nerve function.

Helping stabilize blood sugar

It promotes insulin secretion, regulates blood sugar levels, and maintains blood sugar balance.

Plant physiological regulatory roles

It is widely found in many plants and participates in processes such as stress resistance, defense, antioxidation, and ripening promotion. Low concentrations of GABA promote plant growth, while high concentrations have an inhibitory effect.

Application direction

As a new functional factor, GABA has been widely used in the field of food industry. Foods developed from ingredients such as GABA-rich germinated brown rice, soybeans, and broad beans are already on the market. And GABA is rich in various beneficial effects on the body and is also widely used in the field of health care products

GABA

Dosage allowed

Although the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) allows GABA to be added to food and stipulates that the dietary intake limit of GABA is 550mg/d, its main functional properties still need to be verified by strict population test results. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) pointed out that adding GABA to food is safe according to the results of toxicology experiments. The scope of use includes beverages, coffee, tea and chewing gum, etc., but it is not allowed to be added to baby food, meat products or meat-containing products. . The Ministry of Health of China announced No. 12 in 2009 that the intake of GABA should not exceed 500mg/d, and the scope of use is beverages, cocoa products, chocolate and its beverages, candies, baked goods and puffed foods, but it cannot be added to baby food.
