Main Functions and Features
Antibacterial Action: Carvacrol has a significant inhibitory effect on both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The mechanism involves disrupting the integrity of microbial cell membranes, increasing membrane permeability, leading to leakage of cell contents, thereby inhibiting bacterial growth and killing bacteria.

Antioxidant and Anti-inflammatory Effects: Carvacrol is an effective natural antioxidant that can effectively scavenge free radicals. In terms of anti-inflammation, carvacrol reduces inflammatory responses by activating PPARα/γ to inhibit COX-2 expression and lowering the levels of inflammatory factors such as TNF-α and IL-1β.
Other Activities: Studies have shown that carvacrol has the potential to induce autophagy and delay aging. In agriculture, it can effectively inhibit various plant pathogenic fungi and insects and is environmentally friendly.
Application Areas
Feed Additives
Intestinal Health Maintenance: Inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria (such as Salmonella and Escherichia coli) in feed and animal intestines, reducing the risk of diarrhea and infection in animals.
Growth and Development: Improves the intestinal microecology of animals, increases feed conversion rate, and promotes healthy growth.
Preservation and Preservation: Used for feed preservation, reducing the use of chemical preservatives.
Food Industry
Used as a natural preservative and flavoring agent for product preservation and flavoring.
Daily Chemical Products
Utilizing its antibacterial properties, it is often added to products such as toothpaste, mouthwash, and shower gel.
Agriculture
Used as a green pesticide to control crop diseases and pests.
Common Preparation Methods
Natural Extraction
Extracted from plant essential oils rich in carvacrol, with oregano oil (carvacrol content can reach 60%-80%) and thyme oil as the main raw materials. The extraction process includes purification steps such as alkali treatment, acidification recovery, and molecular distillation.
Chemical Synthesis
Prepared from p-isopropyltoluene through reactions such as sulfonation and alkali fusion. Lower cost, suitable for large-scale production.
Bio-Fermentation
Bio-synthesized carvacrol using metabolically engineered microorganisms through synthetic biology pathways, conforming to green and sustainable development principles.
The Application Value of Carvacrol in Animal Husbandry
I. Antibacterial Mechanism
The antibacterial effect of carvacrol is not a single pathway, but rather a synergistic effect through multiple targets. Studies have shown that phenolic substances such as carvacrol mainly act on the cell membrane and cell wall structure of bacteria, disrupting cell membrane integrity, interfering with pH homeostasis, and ultimately leading to bacterial death. This differs from traditional antibiotics and is less prone to cross-resistance.
II. Improving the Quality of Livestock Products
Compared to vitamin E, carvacrol has stronger antioxidant enzyme activity, effectively alleviating oxidative stress caused by transportation, environmental changes, and other factors, thereby improving meat quality. In livestock and poultry production, carvacrol, through its antioxidant activity, can increase carcass weight, breast muscle weight, meat tenderness and juiciness, reduce lipid oxidation, and simultaneously reduce abdominal fat deposition.
III. Research on Meat Rabbit Farming
Research Design: 160 healthy 35-day-old Ira meat rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups. The basal diets of these groups were supplemented with 0 (control group), 100, 200, and 300 g/ton carvacrol, respectively. The experiment lasted 28 days.

Experimental Results:
| Parameter | Effect (100 g/ton group) |
|---|---|
| Growth Performance | Average daily gain and average daily feed intake significantly increased; final weight increased; diarrhea rate and mortality decreased |
| Nutrient Digestibility | Crude protein apparent digestibility significantly improved |
| Intestinal Morphology | Ileal villus height and mucosal thickness increased; villus height / crypt depth ratio increased |
| Short-Chain Fatty Acids | Butyric acid content in cecum significantly increased |
| Intestinal Microbiota | Abundance of Firmicutes and Oscillospira increased; abundance of Bacteroidetes decreased |
| Metabolic Pathways | Bile acid synthesis, terpenoid-quinone biosynthesis, etc. up-regulated; sphingolipid metabolism and lipopolysaccharide synthesis down-regulated |
Partial experimental data:

Conclusion: Dietary supplementation with carvacrol can improve the growth performance and nutrient digestibility of meat rabbits, improve intestinal morphology and microbiota structure, and positively regulate metabolic pathways. Under the conditions of this experiment, the recommended addition level is 100 g/ton.

This demonstrates that carvacrol not only possesses antibacterial and antioxidant activities, but also improves intestinal health, enhances growth performance, and improves meat quality in animal husbandry. Carvacrol, as a natural plant-based feed additive, has broad application prospects.
