Arachidonic Acid

Arachidonic acid (ARA) is an omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid commonly found in our foods, such as beef, chicken, eggs, and fish. Generally, we can consume 100-200 mg of ARA daily. Arachidonic acid is one of the most active omega-6 fatty acids, playing an important role in the development of the nervous system, maintenance of immunity, development of memory/learning ability, maintenance of bone mineral density, pancreatic health, and cardiovascular health. Arachidonic acid is widely present in terrestrial animal fats such as lard and beef tallow, but in low amounts, generally less than 1%; it is rare in vegetable oils, found only in trace amounts in moss and fern seed oils; it is mainly found in marine fish oil. Studies have found that ARA content in the adrenal phospholipid fatty acids of terrestrial animals (pigs and cattle) is as high as 15% or more. Industrially, ARA is mainly produced using microbial fermentation, and it is an important precursor for the synthesis of prostaglandins in the human body.

• Chemical Properties: Its full name is all-cis-5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic acid. It is a colorless to pale yellow oily liquid at room temperature, easily oxidized, and must be stored away from light.
• Physiological Functions: Primarily found in cell membrane phospholipids, it is a precursor to inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, participating in immune regulation, inflammatory responses, and the maintenance of vascular function. It is crucial for the development of the infant brain and optic nerve.

Promotes Brain and Nervous System Development

During infancy and early childhood, ARA is an essential fatty acid for brain and nervous system development. It participates in nerve cell growth, neurotransmitter transmission, and synapse formation, playing a crucial role in cognitive abilities, learning and memory, and neural plasticity. ARA deficiency may impair brain development, leading to cognitive delays.

Promotes Retinal Formation and Vision Development

ARA is an important component of retinal cell membrane phospholipids, participating in the construction and functional maintenance of retinal cells. It plays a vital role in vision development and protection. ARA deficiency may affect normal retinal development, leading to vision problems.

Regulates Immune Response

ARA can be converted into physiologically active substances such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes, participating in immune regulation. Adequate intake helps enhance the body's immunity, promotes immune cell activity, and simultaneously inhibits excessive inflammatory responses through metabolites such as lipoxygenin, balancing the immune response and reducing the risk of allergies and autoimmune diseases.

Cardiovascular Protective Effects

ARA can regulate lipid metabolism, reduce blood viscosity, increase vascular elasticity, inhibit platelet aggregation, and reduce the formation of atherosclerotic plaques, helping to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease and hypertension.

ARA metabolites can activate the epidermal growth factor receptor signaling pathway, stimulate the proliferation of skin and mucous membrane epithelial cells, promote angiogenesis and granulation tissue formation, and accelerate the wound healing process.

Infant Nutrition:

• As a key nutrient for the development of the infant's brain and retina, it is often added to infant formula in combination with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) to mimic breast milk components, promoting nerve cell proliferation, differentiation, and synapse formation, thereby enhancing cognitive abilities and visual function.

Pharmaceuticals:

• Inflammation and Immune Regulation: As a precursor to bioactive substances such as prostaglandins, thromboxanes, and leukotrienes, it participates in the regulation of the body's inflammatory response. • In aquaculture and livestock farming, as a feed additive, it can promote the growth and development of fish, shrimp, poultry, and livestock, improve survival rate, stress resistance, and meat quality. In particular, in fish farming, it helps improve body color and growth performance.
