Juniper extract contains α-pinene, myrcene, limonene, p-cymene, β-elemene, caryophyllene, humulene, γ-piperazine, terpinene-4-ol, borneol, citronellol, and anethole, among others. The leaves contain cypress biflavonoid A and cypress biflavonoid A. The branches and leaves contain volatile oils, the composition of which is similar to that of the fruit volatile oil.
The heartwood contains various terpenoids, including α- and β-cypressene, as well as organic acids. The petroleum ether extract of this extract showed inhibitory activity against Staphylococcus aureus in vitro, and even at a dilution of 1:1600, it still inhibited bacterial growth.
Treatment of the petroleum ether extract sequentially with 3% sodium bicarbonate, sodium carbonate, and potassium hydroxide revealed that the fraction obtained from the potassium hydroxide solution exhibited antibacterial activity, even at a dilution of 1:12800, but it had no effect against Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, or Shigella dysenteriae. The distillate obtained by vacuum distillation also has antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus when diluted to 1:12800.
