Phellodendron bark extract is a natural medicinal plant extract derived from the dried bark of *Phellodendron chinense* (Sichuan Phellodendron) or *Phellodendron amurense* (Guan Phellodendron) of the Rutaceae family. According to the *Chinese Pharmacopoeia*, the cross-section of *Phellodendron chinense* shows fibrous stratification, while the cross-section of *Phellodendron amurense* is bright yellow. It is bitter and cold in nature, and enters the kidney and bladder meridians. The product is a brownish-yellow powder, with core components including berberine and phellodendron alkaloids. Commonly used ratios are 10:1 and 20:1. Analysis is performed using TLC and HPLC. It is stored in sealed aluminum foil bags or cardboard drums, with a shelf life of 24 months.
In production, the traditional sun-drying process has been upgraded to spray drying, effectively improving solubility and retention of active ingredients. Different processing methods result in different emphases of efficacy: the raw product clears heat and dries dampness, the salt-processed product nourishes yin and reduces fire, and the charred product astringes and stops bleeding.
